Team Manager, Environment


Telstra’s HSE Department lead the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) strategy for Telstra’s employees and stakeholders, and are taking courageous steps to manage HSE risks and build a sustainable future. We are on the hunt for a Team Manager, Environment to provide professional environmental management advice to effectively implement management systems, field processes, and provide specialist advice on environmental risks.

Reporting into the General Manager, HSE Telstra Operations, and leading a team of like-minded professionals, this pivotal position is integral in providing HSE business partnering for the Telstra Operations Lines of Business. In addition, this role will drive consolidated governance reporting programs to Lines of Business management teams, risk-steering committees and Corporate HSE.

You will be challenged with applying HSE and environmental solutions to an extensive network of unique and geographically diverse, complex receiving sites, and work with a multitude of internal and external stakeholders to determine sustainable programs of work.

Your key responsibilities will include (but not be limited to) the following:

  • Remain current with HSE legislation and industry best practice to benchmark, identify and introduce best practice environment management solutions to the business.
  • Provide regulator management for any issue with environmental regulators and external bodies including Federal, State, local government, contractors and customers.
  • Lead a team of specialists to partner with the Telstra Operations business and maintain strong relationships with Senior Leadership.
  • Together with the LOB HSE Managers, ensure an effective HSE RACI is adopted for environmental aspects in each Line of Business.
  • Develop, implement and maintain environmental management systems, procedures and guidance materials to manage Telstra Operations risk in accordance with ISO14001:2015 and Telstra’s Minimum Environment Requirements.
  • Develop business specific HSE system documentation for parts of the business that require assistance to improve their systems.
  • Facilitate risk assessments specific to environmental aspects.
  • Minimise risk through developing a range of interventions including education and awareness programs specific to business requirements.
  • Work with the assurance teams within the lines of business to grow the maturity of the HSE audit and inspections.
  • Champion the resolution of audit findings and corrective actions in the business.
  • Establish environmental targets and performance indicators for the businesses, and monitor and report progress.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for someone with 5 – 10 years’ experience managing a team of Environment or Industrial Hygiene professionals coupled with extensive holistic experience in field investigation, remediation experience, licencing, and engineering project management from an environments and HSE perspective.

Along with your expert-level influencing and stakeholder management skills, you will have specialist knowledge on specific programs of work particularly dealing with lead, asbestos, and hydrocarbon management. The successful candidate will hold a Formal tertiary qualifications in environment or industrial hygiene, e.g. degree or post graduate studies and ideally, qualifications in Health and Safety or Risk Management.
