Health and Safety Team Manager (Customer Delivery and Operational Line of Business)


Telstra’s HSE Department lead the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) strategy for Telstra’s employees and stakeholders, and are taking courageous steps to manage HSE risks and build a sustainable future. As part of the HSE Leadership team, you will undertake the management of all contractual HSE obligations for Telstra Ops LOB, and Telstra’s internal obligations for HSE improvement. You will manage 3 senior team members to meet HSE compliance requirements on incident investigations, risk management, contractor performance and government/legislative requirements amongst other HSE related activities.

You will be building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders across Telstra, to influence and gain buy-in to your expert HSE advice and recommendations. Through collaboration with the wider HSE team, you will assess HSE commercial impacts to ensure key performance indicators are met, and exemplify a high performance HSE culture. This is a busy role, and will test your ability to handle multiple conflicting priorities and meet deadlines.

Your key responsibilities will include (but not be limited to) the following:

  • Ensure Telstra Operations steerco’s and Line of Business (LOB) remain informed of HSE initiatives, programs of work and governance structures that promote consistent management of HSE risk in the business
  • Collaborate with aligned businesses to proactively review the business HSE risk profile to assess its ongoing adequacy and respond to emerging HSE risks.
  • Benchmark, identify and introduce best practice HSE risk management solutions to the business.
  • Lead a team of HSE professionals to partner with the business.
  • Provide advice and support to the business on the development, implementation and integration of the HSE improvement plans.
  • Support the business monthly HSE performance review against targets and the process for improvement.
  • Ensure effective RACI’s are developed for the LOB.
  • Monitor and report progress against HSE targets and performance indicators for the businesses.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with the business Managers.
  • Provide consolidated reports for Group Executives and governance functions within the business.
  • Champion the resolution of audit finding actions in the business.
  • Assist the business in responding to HSE audits and queries from 2nd or 3rd LOD functions.
  • Work with the assurance teams within the lines of business to grow the maturity of HSE audits and inspections.
  • Develop business specific HSE system documentation for parts of the business that require assistance to improve their systems.
  • Facilitate risk assessments and the development of controls, including safe work method statements.
  • Lead and develop a team of HSE Advisors to deliver the HSE programs within the business. 
  • Minimising risk through developing a range of interventions including education and awareness programs specific to business requirements.

To be successful in this role, you will have about 10 – 15 years’ experience managing a HSE team, preferably in a high-risk industries, and a relevant degree in HSE. You will have demonstrated experience implementing HSE policies, programs, systems and certifications, coupled with strong experience managing contractors and liaising with contract managers. As previously mentioned, effective stakeholder management in a large corporate matrix and proven organisational skills will also be imperative to your success in this role.
