About the opportunity

Our Wagerup Refinery has a permanent opportunity as a Civil Engineer, to work and learn within the Impoundment group. The working roster is Monday to Friday, with one leisure day every four-week period.

Located in the breathtaking South-West and reporting through to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, our business is looking for a 'go getter' who will drive our safety culture and efficiency.

You will be a catalyst in ensuring standard methodology processes are developed, shared and implemented. Operating across a range of development horizons including short, medium- and long-term planning of residue disposal and be part of the Geotechnical function within the site operations as well as the wider team of engineers across Alcoa’s WA operations. Alcoa’s impoundments include residue dams and water/liquor dams at Wagerup.

Main roles and responsibilities include;

  • Provide civil/geotechnical engineering advice and instruction and provide technical support to operations including management.
  • Review engineering designs against Alcoa requirements and assess engineering work against current Alcoa standards/procedures and national/international standard methodologies.
  • Ensure critical factors relating to dam stability, surveillance and safety are controlled and comply. Including performing daily inspections and audits.
  • Provide Engineering Scope of Works to Contractors and detailed material take off for procurement and contractor estimation.
  • Field Quality and Quantity verification and reporting of all Civil Construction works per Alcoa’s Mandated Standards.
  • Develop and be accountable for residue storage plans (sand, mud, dredging) and water management plans for the site on a weekly, quarterly and annual basis.
  • Identifies the scope of work and budget requirements (subject to final approval)
  • Delegate specific tasks and responsibilities for aspects of impoundment management to qualified personnel; Designers, Constructors and Advisers.
  • Lead third party residue annual audits ensuring remedial actions are recorded, actioned and completed.
  • Maintain residue storage models (water surge volume, storm attenuation, mud drying performance, dry/filter cake stacking performance, drying area requirements).
  • Assist and have values input into the residue location 25-year Master Plan and associated annual capital works program for all residue projects,
  • Assist in the optimization of projects within the major programmed of works in consultation with contract engineering resources (design and construction) regarding cost and construction resources required.
  • Implement change and innovation to support the achievement of cost reduction and improvement opportunities
  • Ensure an effective focus of engineering resources on dam safety, risk reduction, cost reduction, asset utilization, effective use of capital, continuous improvement initiatives and waste reduction of equipment and systems

To be successful in this role and to play a part in our ongoing success you will have:

  • Bachelor of Civil, Geotechnical, Engineering Geology or Mining Engineering Degree.
  • Experience in geotechnical assessments of dam stability and design, in a similar operational role is considered advantageous.
  • Experience with use of/understanding of slope stability packages such as Slope W or Slide would be beneficial
  • Sound knowledge of Australian and internationally recognised Tailings Management Standards and Best Practice Guidelines (ANCOLD, MAC/CDA, USBR)
  • Experience in the alumina or heavy metals industry is considered desirable.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Highly attuned risk management skills.
  • Competence in managing and tracking budgets.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Business and customer focus with an appreciation for engineering relationships

About where you will work

Wagerup Alumina Refinery is located on the border of Western Australia’s Peel and South West regions, 130 kilometres south of Perth, four kilometres north of Yarloop and 13 kilometres south of Waroona. Wagerup refinery employs approximately 600 people and of those, around 30 per cent live in the local shires of Waroona and Harvey.
