Wholesale Gas Accountant


Due to a recent internal move, we currently have an opportunity for a Wholesale Gas Accountant to join Group Finance.

Reporting to the Wholesale Market Accounting Manager, the primary purpose of the role is to provide timely, accurate financial information and financial analysis against budget / forecast to ensure in-depth understanding of business performance and provoke change and support decision making.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Calculate the monthly Wholesale Gas gross margin including transfer pricing revenue, energy cost, and all other accruals including balance sheet items in an accurate, timely and efficient manner and in accordance with AGL accounting standards
  • Understanding of accounting implication to the commercial deals and coordinating accounting treatment to the new commercial dealing
  • Take control of the reconciliation of general ledger accounts and ensure reconciliation is completed in a timely and efficient manner and is well understood and documented
  • Establish knowledge of key non-financial data metrics including weather, customer numbers and volume to assist in the preparation of the gross margin accounting
  • Produce timely, accurate, high quality financial statements in accordance with group accounting standards
  • Prepare detailed, accurate and relevant management reporting by specified deadlines on Wholesale Gas gross margin and communicate results to stakeholders
  • Perform financial analysis of key drivers, trends monthly, year on year analysis and prior year analysis on P&L, balance sheet and cashflow
  • Work collaboratively with FP&A team to deliver timely, accurate, high quality financial and management reporting to ensure drivers of variances are fully understood for gross margin and cash flow
  • Add value by pro-actively bringing to management attention areas of potential financial opportunities and risks
  • Continuous improvement of management reporting to ensure reports are value adding and contain relevant metrics and informative commentary

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Solid accounting knowledge relevant to the Energy industry
  • Derivative accounting knowledge/ experience will be highly regarded
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Strong numerical analysis skills together with the ability to present complex data/concepts in a clear and easily understood manner
  • Ability to take initiative for process improvements
  • Advanced Excel skills- exposure to macro and query language would be highly regarded
  • Excellent organisational ability
  • Business acumen with a commercial awareness and sound understanding of commercial drivers and relationships
  • Collaborative team player
  • Highly motivated, energetic, flexible, commercially focused with can-do attitude
