What we do

South32

Most of us use the metals and minerals we mine every day, no matter who we are, or where we live. We play a big part in people’s everyday lives. Our commodities are used to produce a range of items that people interact with daily.

Playing a key part in how the modern world works, we mine and produce commodities in a safe and sustainable way.

We invest in high-quality operations and have a significant presence in each commodity we produce. We are the world’s largest producer of manganese ore, a top producer of silver and one of the world’s largest ferronickel producers.

ABOUT THE COMMODITIES WE BRING TO SOCIETY

Our commodities can be found in nearly every aspect of our lives.

They power our homes, start our cars, build our roads, bridges, skyscrapers and hospitals and even make our coins and jewellery.

CASE STUDY

We have recently signed an agreement to partner in the Huckleberry property in northern Quebec, Canada. This is a low-cost entry for us into the Labrador Trough, a province known to be highly prospective for copper and nickel. We can earn a 50 per cent interest in the property by funding C$2.5 million for exploration and a further 20 per cent interest, if we spend an additional C$2.5 million.

EXPLORATION

We continue to look for new opportunities to expand our horizons. We invest in exploration inside and outside of our portfolio, but making sure they match our capabilities. Our exploration activities are carefully selected to have a high chance of success and are spread around the world, including places we have not operated in before.

MARKETING

We have a central marketing team that works across all our operations. Marketing is managed out of Singapore with support offices in London, South Africa, and Australia.

The marketing team works closely with our regions to make decisions on how to get our resource to market and is also responsible for commodity sales, purchasing of strategic raw materials and managing the delivery of commodities to customers.
