Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)

With the unrelenting pace of change in our industry combined with increasing capabilities of new technologies, we are constantly looking at ways to develop our people and to keep their skills current.

Training & Development programs

Many people come to the ABC with qualifications in journalism, radio, on-line or a relevant course suited to a corporate area. However, there are courses available to keep you up to date with skills or systems unique to the ABC or to keep your industry knowledge relevant.

Our training courses include:

  • Digital skills development;
  • Production skills;
  • Camera skills;
  • Editing skills and associated technology;
  • Desktop Editing for Journalists;
  • Writing for Radio/ Writing for News/ Writing for Television;
  • ABC Editorial Policies;
  • Legal workshops;
  • Core systems including; SAP HR, Finance, Records management, Rights Management, training in IT systems, iNews and NETIA;
  • A range of OH&S training including; fatigue management, personal risk assessment, induction, manual handling, first aid, and radiological awareness training.

Leadership programs

Our management and leadership programs are delivered internally, tailored specifically for our organisation and for your experience.

Scholarship programs

We offer scholarship programs, which provide recognition and professional development to individuals, such as:

  • The Andrew Olle Scholarship, creating career development opportunities for young ABC journalists and program makers;
  • The Donald McDonald ABC Scholarship to the Reuters Foundation Program in Oxford, UK. For experienced ABC journalists eager to pursue a research project in the Reuter Foundation Program at Green College, Oxford;
  • The Indigenous Staff Scholarships provide training and development opportunities for ABC Indigenous staff;
  • Women in Engineering Scholarship - part of the ABC's program of positive action strategies to increase the representation of women in engineering and technology. For women enrolled in the final year of an Electrical Engineering Degree or Diploma (or similar).

Study Assistance

The ABC may grant study leave and financial assistance to support you undertake formal courses of study at tertiary and higher education institutions.
