Ms Bains, now vice-president of Aurizon's Network Finance business, has been with the company since 2010 and will be the only woman on its seven-member executive committee.
She has been responsible for dealing with regulatory issues involving Aurizon's rail networks, and has often briefed analysts.
A chartered accountant, Ms Bains was formerly head of finance, customer service at Teléfonica O2 in the UK, and was a financial controller for British retailer Next. She has also worked for GE Capital and Arthur Andersen.
