Functions and Events Manager

The Sparkke Change Beverage Company

Who we are:

The Sparkke Change Beverage Company (SPARKKE) is a female founded and led beer and wine company producing 100% natural, award winning and predominantly mid-strength bevvies.

We’re also a for purpose company raising awareness and funds for important social issues through alcohol– the great conversation starter of Australia.

Launched in late November 2016 with the largest on-line pre-sale alcohol campaign in Australia’s history, SPARKKE has been challenging the entrenched cultural and gender stereotypes of Australia’s $15 billion pa booze industry ever since.

Our latest move is the purchase of The Whitmore Hotel in the western corner of Adelaide SA which opened as the CBD’s first brew pub on International Women’s Day this year.

Why we exist:

We love our beer! And at the same time, we’re working to create a platform for good, for change, and a platform that celebrates diversity and inclusivity. We’re helping to change our industry, putting more of the “good” in to alcohol. We’re also a team of social activists representing diverse orientations, cultures, and backgrounds, disrupting an industry that’s largely male, pale, and stale.

Like our good friends at Toast Brewing in the UK, we definitely believe that if you want to change the world, you have to help throw a better party.

SPARKKE at the Whitmore - let’s get that party started!

SPARKKE at the Whitmore is the company’s first brewing home. Here, makers are celebrated – our own and others - and we’re creating and serving a wide and inclusive community. Everything we do at the Whitmore is driven by our values of individuality, raw truth, social equity, a passion for excellence, and inclusivity. This shows up in food, bevvies, the Sparkke Shop, events and artists, our beautiful new brewery and the extraordinary environment of the Whitmore.

The building itself is a bit of a marvel; during our renovation process we discovered a pub within a pub. Previously undiscovered, built in the 1840s, the Whitmore was first licensed by Thomas Maslin in December 1838 – I guess you could say, he was the first squatter on the land we now call home. Dinners for 50, weddings for a 100, performances for 300 or private dining/board room for 16 and all things between – every function area reveals the building’s history.

But don’t look for stereotypes here, you’re just as likely to get Adelaide’s best expresso martini as one of our 100% natural brews – like our cider (Best of Class 2017 and 2018 at the Australian National Cider Awards) – while you are sitting on our new roof top bar looking out over the green of the square.

And whatever you’re drinking on the roof top, you’ll be able to sit back and cruise to the sounds of one of the many diverse artists who’ll perform at the Whitmore – jazz, indie, classical, stand up, poetry slams, rock. It’s pretty much all going on.

We’re especially happy to say that we’re an equal access venue; we’re fully wheelchair accessible across both floors.

We know we won’t get everything 100% right, so your feedback really counts, and we’re hear to listen to what you’ve got to say. The Whitmore belongs to you, as much as it does to us. Welcome home.

Who You Are

You love Sparkke and what it stands for – our values of inclusivity, raw truth, universal fairness, individuality and a passion for excellence resonates strongly with your own values.

You understand that start ups are hard work, and realise the job will be demanding – but great opportunities will flow from a job well done.

You love all things hospitality and have a warm and generous approach to functions. Making people feel welcome and at home is second nature to you. You have a very strong visual presentation lens, and nothing escapes you when delivering experiences that will make a client’s function memorable to all.

You’re also a strong manager of all elements of functions, including costs – you are able to build cost effective, creative functions and events.

But you also love to play, and are demonstrably capable of doing so, on the larger event stage. You’ll take pleasure in creating an event program that delivers brand benefits as well as revenue and profit at our beautiful venue.

You are deeply competent in all aspects of service delivery.

The Opportunity

To begin with you’ll be asked to dive straight in and develop a function strategy, tactical plan and budget including resourcing and return that supports the brand and delivers revenue growth for our pub while simultaneously picking up a number of small scale functions already booked.

You will report to the Manager, and engage closely with our Head Chef, and company service, marketing and product teams. We believe the best ideas can come from the most unexpected places and it is important to be aware of the team’s individual expertise.

Once your plan is signed off by your manager and Sparkke founders, it is expected that you will provide a short report for each function reflecting your original budget results and you will share learnings on what went well and what could be improved for the future. These reports will be filed centrally and will become part of the Sparkke functions tool kit.

You will own the end-to-end delivery of exceptional and creative functions and events with key corporate customer, the general public, event targets/partners. You have the opportunity to create your own iconic experiences at Sparkke’s first Brew Pub. Our event calendar includes but is not limited to creative presentations, music/art/beer/food festivals, concerts, corporate events, conferences, dinners and functions.

Depending on your level of creativity there is also a potential platform for you to not only drive the execution of your own events, but, once proven, make your mark on the creative expression of the Sparkke brand, with reference to Sparkke’s membership.
