Telstra is embarking on a rapid transformation as we implement our T22 strategy. This includes the development of world-class technology programs such as construction of our 5G network and our digitisation program of work.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This role is for an experienced Legal Counsel to join the Buy, Build and Partner Contracting practice area.  This team provides legal support for strategic procurement, IT, network construction, digital, product sourcing and outsourcing transactions with Telstra’s suppliers and delivery partners. We also support Telstra’s delivery contracts with nbn co.  Reporting to the Buy, Build and Partner Contracting Practice Lead, you will be an integral part of this collaborative and inclusive team.

You will provide high quality, independent and strategic legal advice that is integral to Telstra delivering its strategic priorities for T22. As part of your role you will also be responsible for providing legal support to clients of the Buy, Build and Partner Contracting practice area by:

  • Drafting, negotiating and providing advice on a range of sourcing agreements (including network design and construction, partner delivery and IT sourcing) with a broad range of providers;
  • Providing legal advice to support the implementation of Telstra’s key commercial contracts with network delivery partners (including nbn co);
  • Advising on a range of other related legal issues, including construction industry compliance (including security of payment), disputes, and intellectual property matters;
  • Providing training and updates to internal clients and the Telstra Legal Services team, and developing precedents and tools to build up legal knowledge and expertise.

SOME OF THE SPECIFICS AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Managing a volume and complexity of work commensurate with your level of experience
  • Giving legal advice that is clear, commercial, fit-for purpose and tailored to the audience
  • Developing proficiency in technology tools and agile ways of working
  • Working well as part of a team in the Buy, Build Partner practice area, as well as developing capability to enable movement into other practice areas to meet peak periods of demand or business priorities
  • Understanding the strategic priorities, legal requirements and current and emerging risks for the relevant practice area
  • Exercising judgment, providing options and being willing to make and communicate the “tough calls”
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with clients and be able to deliver difficult messages whilst maintaining an effective relationship

WHAT YOU'LL BRING                         

This role can be based in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane and is a permanent role. To be successful in this role, you will require a current practicing certificate and at least 4 years’ post-qualification experience working on large projects, procurement and construction work in a leading law firm or in-house.

Things we’ll value:

  • Front end construction contracting experience including design and construction, minor works and EPCM contracts acting for principals and suppliers.
  • Experience with infrastructure or mining projects, as well as a good understanding of construction legislation throughout Australia;
  • Experience in managing negotiations directly with suppliers or delivery partners;
  • Experience or interest in innovation  and the way legal services are delivered, such as contract automation or other  legal technology solutions;
  • The ability to work independently when solving complex problems;
  • Some experience or interest in general property or technology contracting  is desirable
