Health and Safety Team Manager (Assurance)


Telstra’s HSE Department lead the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) strategy for Telstra’s employees and stakeholders, and are taking courageous steps to manage HSE risks and build a sustainable future. The Health and Safety Team Manager (Assurance) will play a key role in working to provide HSE Assurance coordination across all lines of business and connect the larger Telstra Operations programs of work and systems to ensure the Line of Business remains in harmony with the broader management of HSE in Telstra Operations.

Reporting to the GM Health, Safety and Environment, you will lead a team of 5 – 7 experienced inspectors who are geographically located across Australia to provide the required professional HSE assurance advice to effectively implement line of business HSE Management Systems assurance activities.

Your key responsibilities will include (but not be limited to) the following:

  • Ensure Telstra Operations has the appropriate training to provide field inspectors and people leaders with the skills required to identify compliance and non-compliance with Telstra’s HSE requirements.
  • Develop multimedia capability in the HSE assurance activities.
  • Work with the HSE team to determine insights from the assurance date and ensure programs are constantly refined to compensate for changes to work activity, performance and external feedback.
  • Provide advice and support to the business on the development, implementation and integration of the HSE assurance plans.
  • Support the business monthly HSE performance review against targets and the process for improvement.
  • Ensure effective RACI’s are developed for the Line of Business quality teams.
  • Monitor and report progress against HSE assurance targets and performance indicators for the businesses.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with the business Quality and Contract Managers.
  • Champion the resolution of audit finding actions in the business.
  • Work with the assurance teams within the lines of business to grow the maturity of HSE audits and inspections.
  • Drive review and initiative development within the lines of business.
  • Facilitate the development of HSE assurance criteria from documents including safe work method statements.
  • Minimising risk through developing a range of interventions including education and awareness programs specific to business requirements.
  • Develop, implement and monitor HSE strategy and programs which will improve and build on a positive HSE culture.

To drive this position and make a lasting impact, you will be a bold and influential operator with the courage to champion change. The successful candidate will be degree qualified in HSE, and have 10 – 15 years’ experience managing a team of HSE professionals, and ideally possesses experience managing large and diverse quality or assurance teams. You will have demonstrated experience in implementing HSE policies and programs, and have the capability to implement assurance programs, and interpret data and results to further develop and augment these programs.
