DataOps Engineer


The multi-disciplinary Big Data team exists to fundamentally change the way Telstra drives action from data. Our skill mix covers business knowledge, machine learning, software and data engineering, architecture, strategy, commercial management, product ownership, analytical operations and Big Data platform engineering.

The Big Data Technical Operations team is accountable for the operations, support, maintenance and extension of the Big Data platforms and the analytical data products running on them.

As a senior member on the team, you will drive the design, implementation, testing, deployment, and post-release production support in an agile DevOps environment. You will execute on engineering and release priorities successfully through strong leadership and communication. Whether a bug fix, performance tuning, or an awesome feature, you will own your work and deliver the most elegant and scalable solutions.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Design, implement and integrate OpenStack based private cloud in Telstra data centres across the Australia, enable the cloud solution to inter-operate smoothly with existing IT infrastructure and processes, ensure reliability, elasticity and security
  • Cluster operations - handles cluster provisioning, monitoring, auto scaling, logs and metrics aggregation, and continuous delivery through the corresponding tools and APIs.
  • Architecting, maintaining, and streamlining our automated build and release pipeline from code compilation, automated testing, to deploying releases to multiple environments.
  • Maintaining source control branches and performing integrations with merge conflicts.
  • Facilitating and championing the quick resolution of problems found during the daily build and deployment efforts.
  • Creating and maintaining documentation of the build/release process.
  • Investigating tools and processes and integrating them so that they can improve the reliability, stability and efficiency with which we release our services.
  • Working closely with the development team to integrate new deployment processes and strategies to meet our feature requirements.
  • Ensures that the process of CI/CD is unified across the big data team.

Qualification/Experience

  • Deep Understanding of Network Concepts, OpenStack deployment
  • Expert level Hypervisor Experience: VMWARE, KVM, Hyper-V, RHEL Linux System Administration
  • Deep Understanding of Network Concepts
  • Scripting - shell, Ruby or Python
  • Expertise in one or more configuration management tool: Ansible, Chef or Puppet for managing medium & large environments
  • Hortonworks, Cloudera or MapR, Hadoop, Spark, Hive, NiFi, Storm.
  • Ambari, YARN, Zookeeper, disk layout and partitioning strategies
  • Experience with deployment to cloud environments. Cloud and on premise hybrid Big Data deployments.
  • DevOps – CI/CD understanding
  • API design and RESTful principles, able to utilize REST APIs for integration and testing
  • Experience in teams employing Agile and DevOps practices – continuous automated testing and deployment of code: Jenkins, Git, JIRA, Confluence

Salary Range: $80,000 - $100,000
