About the opportunity:

The Senior Legal Counsel role is responsible for providing legal services to support Challenger Limited (Challenger) group’s investments and corporate matters.

The Corporate & Investments Legal Team is responsible for:

  • the legal services relating to all of Challenger’s investments; and
  • the general corporate work for the Challenger group.

This role will focus predominantly, but not exclusively, on providing legal support to the Challenger Life, and Funds Management divisions (mainly Challenger Investment Partners).

The position is responsible for providing high quality Corporate & Investment legal services to the Challenger group which will be achieved by:

  • commitment and passion for your role, and drive for excellence;
  • developing and maintaining strong business partner relationships and facilitating efficient and effective business decisions through the provision of commercial, practical, timely and constructive legal advice;
  • adding value to the business, the Corporate & Investments Legal team, and broader Legal and Strategy team, by delivery of best practice legal services;
  • being an engaged team player;
  • flexibility – having the ability to change and adapt to Challenger’s changing business requirements and upskill as appropriate;
  • contributing to maintaining an appropriate robust level of governance and risk management to manage legal risks.

The position will suit somebody who enjoys transactional work, has excellent people skills, is pro-active, commercially focused and a team player. It is important that you are able to work in a dynamic, driven, commercial, open plan environment across business lines, be flexible with your work practice and the type of work that you may become involved with, and are excellent at managing priorities and client needs.

Skills and experience:

  • 8+ years relevant legal services experience
  • Formal academic Australian legal qualification
  • Banking and Finance: general corporate finance (bilaterals, club and syndications for senior and mezzanine lending), property finance private / LBO debt, securitisations and warehousing (CMBS / RMBS / ABS).
  • General corporate: good working knowledge of general corporate law matters e.g. directors duties, related party transactions, financial assistance, insider trading, continuous disclosure obligations (preferred)
  • Funds Management: investment management agreements, managed investment schemes (working knowledge of Chapter 5C Corporations Act) (preferred)
