Senior Analyst - Load Forecasting


Due to a recent move, we currently have an opportunity for a Senior Load Forecasting Analyst with in our Wholesale Market business unit in Load Forecasting team.

The key focus of this role is to provide direction and oversight of market analysis, research and insights, and modelling development, enabling the continuous improvement of WM’s gas and electricity load forecasting capability, thus supporting high-quality trading and commercial decision making.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Contribute to the ongoing enhancement of commercial decision-making within AGL’s Wholesale Markets business unit, through provision of and continuous improvement to high-quality quantatitive and qualitative forecasting and analysis of customer demand
  • Provide guidance to AGL’s Wholesale Operations team, particularly on days of potential high demand and/or price volatility
  • Provide thought leadership in the conceptualisation, development, deployment and continual improvement of AGL’s in-house market modelling and forecasting capability
  • Provide support to the Load Forecasting Manager through coaching and mentoring others within the Load Forecasting team and representing the Load Forecasting team in discussions with internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to AGL system enhancement by providing strategic direction on the WM forecasting system landscape
  • Maintain clear, concise and up to date documentation and operating procedures for forecasting systems, models and reporting

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • In-depth understanding of the key drivers of the Australian economy and the data sources that must be interrogated in order to meaningfully include these drivers in forecasting models. Prior experience in the energy industry is an advantage but not essential
  • Demonstrated experience in analytical modelling with advanced programming languages (Python, R, MATLAB, SAS, C++ or equivalent). Experience in using version control tools (Git, SVN) would be positively considered
  • The ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, and effectively manage time and prioritise workload: contributing to keep the focus of the team on the right priorities and accountabilities
  • Ability to provide guidance and mentoring to other colleagues.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to develop strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Tertiary qualification in econometrics or applied mathematics/statistics or equivalent field
