Operations Training Manager


About role:

You will be responsible for the management, development and delivery of all Operator related training programs at AGL Macquarie’s Bayswater and Liddell Power Stations.

Reporting to the Production Manager, you will be an essential partner to the business, identifying training requirements to achieve and maintain the required level of highly skilled Power Plant Operators. You will consider existing skills and areas for improvement, plan for future business needs and ensure the right programs are in place to achieve the business objectives. Training programs in your scope will include all Operator foundation programs, unit and station plant training, panel training and all mandatory safety / technical training for operations staff.

As part of this role you will also develop a technical team to deliver the required training across both power stations ensuring quality, consistency, efficiency, and timely delivery.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Develop, review and manage the delivery of Operator training programs at Bayswater and Liddell Power stations
  • Lead and coach technical trainers to ensure the effective delivery of technical training programs
  • Ensure regular review of operator documentation to meet changing plant and safety requirements (including training materials relating to the Permit to Work and isolation systems) as well as managing the review of current Operator training programs through consultation with key stakeholders
  • Create effective business partnerships with Operational staff
  • Drive training programs that meet changing labour strategies and skill shortages, developing and implementing innovative and modern training methods to increase training effectiveness
  • Provide advice and technical support to the Production Managers to implement training programs to meet business needs
  • Understand, identify and effectively manage any Industrial Relations impact in developing new training programs

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Training management experience within the power industry (essential)
  • Extensive knowledge and practical experience in the operation of large coal fired power stations or similar heavy industry environment
  • Experience in or willingness to successfully deliver power station training programs using continuous improvement methodology
  • Relevant Trade Certificate or experience in maintenance environment
  • Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment or relevant tertiary qualification
  • Knowledge and experience in training needs analysis, preparation, presentation, evaluation and validation of training programs
  • Knowledge of workplace health, safety and environment practices as well as appropriate legislation and relevant organisations and bodies
  • Proven leadership, mentoring and coaching skills supported by strong commitment to learning and development
  • Proven written, communication and presentation skills and the ability to understand and apply business policies, standards and instructions
