Commercial Analyst


The Commercial Analyst role provides financial modelling and analytical support on commercial issues affecting the business, such as, strategic initiatives, investment decisions, major capital expenditures, and M&A transactions across the firm. Projects can range from asset divestments, screening and assessing growth opportunities, and options analysis supporting organisational strategy.

This role will also assist in driving continuous improvement opportunities in process and financial models used within AGL for management reporting, financial analysis, planning and forecasting.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Prepare and/or review financial models in relation to all parts of the energy industry. Models should follow best practice modelling principles, be well laid out, accurate, and completed in a timely manner
  • Review, refine and take ownership of externally developed financial models
  • Work as part of project teams to determine model inputs and key assumptions including accounting and tax treatment of transactions
  • Assist the Corporate Development team in other aspects of M&A transactions (as required)
  • Provide training and modelling advice to other team members, as well as the wider Group Commercial Finance and Group Operations teams
  • Engage effectively with senior management, Group Commercial Finance, and Group Commercial Finance and CFO

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Extensive experience with best practice business modelling principles on transactions, project finance or investment appraisal projects. Extensive experience of modelling fully integrated financial statements (Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow)
  • 5 years plus experience with a substantial part of that in financial modelling and analysis, ideally in a corporate development environment, investment bank or Big 4 accounting firm
  • Highly numerate and commercially aware
  • Ability to define problems and scope modelling requirements. Able to design, build, review and navigate through complex financial models
  • Strong understanding of valuation methodologies and discount rates
  • A good understanding of accounting and tax concepts and their impact on valuation
  • Accurate and details focused whilst being able to simultaneously understand the “big picture”
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in business partnering including building relationships with senior management and providing commercial insights
  • Relevant commercial experience in supporting transaction execution would be considered favorably as would energy experience
