Chemical Superintendent


Reporting to the Operations Manager, Loy Yang the Chemical Superintendent is responsible for leading the scientific services team to design and deliver a Chemical Treatment Program which minimizes corrosion and deposition within the water steam cycle, while ensuring compliance to AGL internal Standards, International Chemistry Guidelines and relevant Australian Standards.

Situated in the beautiful Latrobe Valley, AGL’s Loy Yang Mine and Power Station is only 90 minutes from Melbourne, 60 minutes to the ocean and the snow! Close by, the town of Traralgon has seen new infrastructure recently with upgraded leisure centre, swimming pool, basketball courts, performing arts and movie theatre.

Your key responsibilities will be (but not limited to):

  • People & Leadership

- Lead, motivate and develop employees to ensure a productive and positive work environment

  • Technical expertise

- Deliver a chemistry program promoting low corrosion and deposition within the water steam cycle

- Deliver of a Cooling water chemistry program that is optimised to minimise corrosion and biological growth

- Deliver of a Stator Water Chemistry program which promotes low corrosion and deposition rates

- Provide scientific advice on environmental waste streams such as, demine plant effluent disposal, prescribed industrial waste disposal, asbestos sampling and air emissions from the combustion process

- Optimise the Loy Yang Chemical program to ensure corrosion and deposition are minimised

- Provide technical expertise in a confined space gas testing

  • Financial

- Manage projects to cost, time and quality requirements

  • Health, Safety and Environment Systems

- Identify, resolve and communicate solutions to complex plant, personnel safety and environmental issues

- Ensure all goals are introduced and adhered to while meeting the organisations policies and standards for HSE Managements

  • To Demonstrate AGL Values:

- Act in the best interests of AGL at all times and working together across the business

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience and informal training
  • Experience in leading a team in a power station or other large industrial site
  • Demonstrated knowledge of degradation mechanisms within the water/steam cycle of a power plant or a large steam raising plant
  • Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills
